No Vehicle Left Behind – Easier Convoy Protection for Mission-Critical Travel

Written by admin | Sep 9, 2025 12:00:00 AM

A vehicle drops 120 meters behind the rest of its convoy. It doesn’t seem like much, except what if it’s carrying cash, high-profile personnel, or expensive equipment? Suddenly, a minor delay escalates into a mission-critical incident putting people, assets, or critical operations at risk.

Our latest innovation in the 3Dtracking platform addresses this distance deviation through the new convoy deviation alert.

Now in BETA-mode with select partners, this alert gives fleet managers real-time visibility when any vehicle breaks formation to help them to ensure convoy protection on route.

How the convoy deviation alert works

We've made it easy to set up a convoy deviation alert within our platform. Here’s how it works, step by step:

  1. Create and configure a convoy

Start by naming your convoy (e.g. “VIP Convoy”) and selecting the primary unit. Then assign one or more secondary units that will follow it. You can define:

  • The maximum allowable deviation distance (e.g. 100 meters).
  • A start and end date/time for convoy monitoring.
  • The appropriate time zone and status (active/inactive).
  1. Monitor in real-time

Once activated, the system automatically tracks all convoy vehicles that live on the map. If any unit exceeds the allowed distance, the convoy deviation alert is triggered.

  1. Receive instant notifications

When a deviation occurs, predefined recipients receive an alert via the platform, SMS, or email. This alert includes:

  • Convoy name and alert type.
  • The vehicle that deviated.
  • The deviation distance.
  • Time and exact location.

Convoy protection in the real world

Armored transport convoys

The convoy deviation alert becomes indispensable for cash-in-transit and high-value goods carriers. If a unit falls behind, even by 100 meters, control centers are immediately notified and have time to act before a potential hijacking.

Mining and industrial sites

In mining zones or industrial sites, convoys often move heavy equipment through blast areas or restricted zones. The deviation alert helps prevent vehicles from veering into dangerous ground or compromising the equipment they’re carrying.

Emergency response and utility crews

Fire, medical, and power restoration teams often deploy in tight formations, especially during storms, outages, or emergencies. This alert helps maintain coordination between lead and support vehicles and reduce any possible confusion.

Government and VIP convoys

Whether transporting government officials, diplomats, or corporate leaders, protective convoys require strict formation. The alert ensures no escort vehicle is left behind or isolated in vulnerable areas, potentially saving lives.

How the convoy deviation alert protects vehicle fleets

  • Instant awareness when things go off track. Know the moment a vehicle falls out of formation.
  • Faster decisions in high-stakes moments. Trigger immediate action before a gap turns into a risk or a crisis.
  • Peace of mind for dispatch and security teams. Automate spacing checks every minute, so no one’s left watching a map.
  • More control without more complexity. Set deviation distance, convoy name, start and end date of the convoy, and more.
  • Built for your toughest operations. From mining zones to city cash routes, the convoy deviation alert is built for real-world scenarios.
  • Supports the people responsible when things go wrong. Give control room staff the tools to spot and solve spacing issues before they escalate.

FAQs about the convoy deviation alert

What is the purpose of convoy protection?

The purpose of convoy protection is to keep every vehicle and person in a group safe by making sure they stay together on route, and under constant oversight. It reduces the risk of separation, delays, or attacks that could expose vulnerable vehicles.

How often does the 3Dtracking platform check for spacing deviations?

The platform checks convoy spacing every 60 seconds to ensure timely detection of any deviation.

Can I use this alert for just two vehicles, or does it require a large fleet?

It works for a maximum of 10 vehicles. You define the units, spacing, and alert parameters.

What happens when a vehicle drops out of formation?

An alert is immediately triggered and sent to the predefined contacts, so you’ll be able to act fast to protect the convoy vehicles.

What kind of spacing can I set?

A user can set a minimum deviation distance of 100 meters. This can be adjusted to suit convoy type, speed, road conditions, or client protocols.

What types of fleets is this designed for?

The alert is especially valuable for fleets carrying cash, sensitive cargo, equipment, or VIPs, all scenarios where distance impacts security.

How do I activate this feature or try it out?

Reach out to your technical account manager or contact us. We’ll share more details about the BETA program.

If your clients operate in high-risk sectors where spacing isn’t just about coordination but about safety, this feature is built for them.

We’re actively inviting feedback from fleet management providers testing the convoy deviation alert in the field. Contact us if you’d like to be one of them.
